Developed in Australia in the 1960's and continuously improved ever since, the modern shade sail was developed for one primarly purpose, to protect those sheltering under the canopy from the harmful effects of the Sun's UV rays. A new synthetic fabric, HDPE, was created by Gale Pacific to meet this need. Today the shade sail offers customers an inexpensive solution for creating shade with UV protection at the heart of fibre of the fabric. The shade sail is the only shade solutions specifically designed to block the sun's UV rays. There are many products which block sunlight from parasols to gazebos, but these do not block the harmful UV rays that come from the sun. Scientists have known for some time that exposire to the sun's UV rays are directly responsible to a number of conditions from sunburn through to much more serious problems such as certain types of skin cancer. The modern shade sail was developed as part of a concerted effort of the Australian government to combat that countries growing numbers of skin cancer diagnosis. During the 1960's and 1970's Australia underwent a government education program to warn people of the dangers which could occur from over exposure to strong sunlight, and simultaneously they began to put in place solutions to help combat the problem. It soon became the norm to see children wearing specifically designed long sleeve tops on the beach, more and more people started taking care to use lots of sun lotion and ... the shade sail began to appear all over the country to offer respite from the sun, especially during the hottest part of the day. Because of their inexpensive cost and their relative ease of installation, the shade sail quickly became very popular in public areas such as parks and swimming pools. Very quickly the shade sail become a very common site across the country. Many local authorities started to erect shade sails in children's play grounds and rest areas in shopping centres. Soon after schools, kindergartens and child care centers installed them to protect the children in their charge. Soon after the domestic market took off until the shade sail is now more common in Austrlia than the kangaroo ! As well as covering areas of the garden where children play, the shade sail also found itself used to cover outside eating and seating areas allowing mum and dad to also enjoy their garden and it is now also commonly used to create a car port protecting the car from the heat of the sun. The shade sail provide many people the world over with an attractive and versatile method of creating safe shade in their garden at an affordable price. Although protection from the sun's harmful rays was undoubtedly the primary objective leading to the development of the UV blocking HDPE fabric, by happenstance the resulting shade sails also possess other features which consumers find desirable .... For example the shade sail is simple to install and creates a pleasing architectural structure. Installing a number of shade sails together can create a unique and interesting look for your outdoor space. Installing your square or rectangualr shade sail with the fixing points at different heights creates a 'twist' (known as Architectural Twist) in the fabric creating a canopy which most find very visually appealing. Using HDPE strands to create a knitted fabric allows air to flow through the fabric and for any hot air to rise through it ands escape. This means that the temperature underneath the shade sail is the coolest possible and much cooler than solid fabric shades such as traditional canopies. With the relatively low cost and ease of installation of a shade sail, anyone can create shade in their garden. A top quality Austrlian shade sail from the Shade Sail Boutique not only protects those relaxing beneath against the sun's harmful UV rays but it can also enhance your outside space allowing you to spend more time enjoying being outdoors. Below are some of the basic considerations that you should consider when selecting your shade sail. In no particular order they are : How it should be used : Shade sails are semi-permanent structures. In many countried almost all permanent structures require a planning permission and there are regulations to which they must adhere. Shade sails as semi-permanent structure do not require planning approval. Primarily used in the hotter summer months when the sun's UV rays are at their strongest, shade sails are generally taken down after the summer season when people want to enjoy the most sunshine possible and the higher risk of UV damage tot he skin is reduced. Image your garden in summer and at other times of the year, perhaps sitting out having a drink with friends. In the summer you will definitely want some protection from the heat and fromt the suns rays, while in autumn perhaps you would like the full sunshine to fall upon you. In hotter climates many people do leave their shade sails in place all year around. Installed correctly they are more than capable of withstanding high winds and most other weather. The one meterological condition for which a shade sail should always be taken down is when snow is forecast. Snow collecting on top of the fabric can add enormous weight stretching the fabric and exerting large forces on the fixing points. Using our fixing kits which include turnbuckles and snap hooks, removing your shade sail a very simple taking only 10 minutes or so. Attachment points to buildings or posts: You must have strong fixing points at each corner of your shade sail. Although the fabric is knitted, the wind can still exert large forces across the shade sail fabric and onto the fixings. The metal fixings used to connect the shade sail to the solid structure also need to be up to the job. To function correctly, a shade sail needs to be installed 'under tension' to ensure that it does not move in the wind. The curved sides of the shade sail have been designed to allow tension to be applied and for the fabric to stretched as it is pulled taught. Location : When planning any shade solution you need to consider how the sun will move across the sky during the day. You should also make allowances for any obstacles such as cables and down pipes when considering where to place your fixings. When installed with tension applied to stretch each side of your shade sail, it will easily cope will all normal wearther conditions including with high winds. If, however, the local weather conditions are extreme such as you would find at the head of a valley where the wind is funneled into a small gap, then a large shade sail could encounter problems in high winds. A square shade sail with sides of 5,4m will have over 29 square meters of canvas. This is a large amount of canvas. For the vast majority of installations this is not a problem at all, but in very exposed locations we recommend that you employ a professional installers to ensure that the attachment points are able to withstand the forces generated in high winds. The size, shape and number of shade sails: We offer a range of shade sails suitable for all installation and of the highest quality. Our shade sails are significantly cheaper than custom made shade sails, perhaps as little as 25% of the cost. Our shade sails are made using the same materials and offer the same high levels of UV protection as a custom shade sail. Measure the area you wish to shade, reduce each length by around 10% to allow for fixings and stretching, and this will be the maximum size of the shade sail you can install. You can then choose any of our shade sails that is smaller than these dimensions. If it is significantly smaller, then stainless steel ropes can be used to connect the shade sail to the fixing point. This would be used in addition to the turnbuckle which would still be used to create the necessary tension. Usin a rope in this way will allow the shade sail, or multiple shade sails, to fly over an area creating a unique design. The Shade Sail Boutique sells high quality shade sails and fixings. Modern shade sails were developed to confront a specific problem in Austrlia where the high rates of skin cancer during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s were alarming the government. The HDPE fabric, with its UV protection at the core of every strand, was developed by Coolaroo's parent company, Gale Pacific, to block the sun's UV. As people everywhere become more aware of the dangers of over exposure to the sun, we begin to take precautions to ensure that our loved ones are protected from this threat to their health. In most things in life there are rosks, but where we can identify specific risks we can make a decision to ameliorate them. For UV there is now a simple, low cost protection available that most of us can afford and use. In Australia shade sails are everywhere. Europe has far fewer, but this is changing. Schools and nurseries around the world are installing shade sails because of their ability to block UV and create shade for children playing underneath. We all want our children to play outside but we do not want them to be safe. The shade sail is an easy to install, inexpensive solution to meet this need. At home we want our children to play outside in the garden. In demestic situations the popularity of the shade sails is increasing rapidly with many people choosing to cover their patios, swimming pool and childrens' play areas. In the summer months children often spends many hours playing in the garden. As parents we all encourage these activities, but we need to make sure that the risk of sunburn (and in later years skin cancer) is as small as possible. Most installations are very low cost compared to a traditional structure and other shade solutions. The installation can normally be performed by a compentent DIY enthusiast. Because of this the increasing popularity of the shade sail is likely to continue into the long term, ensuring that families the world over are protected from the harmful effects of the sun while allowing those families to continue to enjoy being outdoors. |
